Steep fines designed to deter North Carolina auto accidents rankles trucking companies

by hef | January 15th, 2008

January 15, 2008

In an effort to protect highways from damages and deter North Carolina truck accidents, the highway patrol has stepped up its enforcement of restrictions for overweight truck drivers, according to The News & Observer.

Six lawsuits have been filed against the North Carolina Department of Crime Control and Public Safety by trucking companies who are dissatisfied with the steep fines, which can reach up to $25,000.

Troopers are standing by their judgment, saying they aren’t concerned with the amount of money the tickets generate, but instead want to make the roads safer from North Carolina auto accidents. Officials said most of the tickets are given to out-of-state drivers who aren’t as familiar with the laws of the state as those who are from North Carolina.
